Faulty Gearbox Dashboard Message and How To Fix It
Imagine driving your Range Rover normally and all of a sudden you experience a gearbox fault warning message on your dashboard. What do you do and how do you fix it?
Your Range Rover does not effectively change gears and you are left trying to get the car to a safe place or the nearest garage. You’re stranded and need someone to get to the bottom of the issue fast.
You imagine that your main dealer would be the best choice for this, right?
We like to think otherwise.
Our customer was frustrated with the lack of response and service needs after visiting the main dealer. They then decided to come to us for a speedy diagnosis and repair. Here’s what happened.

What We Found
The Range Rover displayed a faulty gearbox message on the dashboard and left our customer with very limited driving ability. After handing their vehicle to us, our team worked right away on diagnosing and fixing the issue.
Diagnosing the Gearbox Fault
Garden City Garage has a strict 15-step diagnostics procedure to ensure that no stone is left unturned with the repair. Making sure that all problems are dealt with on-site, reduces the likelihood of coming back later down the line.
To begin our repair procedure, we first had to diagnose any fault codes that would narrow down the issue with the gearbox.
Using Land Rover-recommended equipment, we were able to quickly identify the following fault code:
- P0860-11 gear shift module A – open circuit
The client was lucky that they brought their vehicle to us, as the gearshift module was faulty, and did not enable the driver to properly engage the automatic gearbox functions, leaving the vehicle stranded.
A “P0860-11 gear shift module A – open circuit” fault may seem daunting to a novice car owner, but our team of technicians had the know-how to understand which part was at fault and immediately began working on the issue.
After working out the correct component, our team looked in detail for any signs of water ingress on the faulty gear shift module. After no immediate evidence of water ingress, the circuits were checked for power, ground and signal readings to ensure the circuitry was not at fault.
During their thorough investigation, our technicians discovered:
- The gear control module had no power and was faulty.
- A replacement automatic gear control module was required.
The dealership lead time was very long to source and repair the module, so we took extensive measures to source the part for our customer.
How We Fixed the Range Rover Evoque
Before any work begins, our expert technicians contact our customer to explain the results of the diagnosis and suggest a repair plan.
The highest care is taken with every customer who enters our workshop, and we must have someone’s complete approval before any repair work begins.
As our customer was so understanding about their Range Rover Evoque needing a new gearbox control module and wanted their vehicle back on the road as soon as possible, they immediately confirmed the go-ahead.
Once a replacement gearbox control unit was quickly sourced from our network of partners in the part supply industry, we were able to begin working on our customers’ vehicle.
The faulty unit was carefully removed from the centre console area by our expert technicians before the new genuine replacement was installed and connected.
From here, a member of our specialist team used diagnostics equipment to test and clear the fault code. They then drove the vehicle to test the gearbox control module to ensure all functions worked correctly. Reverse, Park, Neutral, Drive and Sport were all tested to ensure proper functionality and make sure that the gearbox fault warning message had permanently disappeared.
As this was all working correctly, the customer was very pleased when they picked up their fully working Evoque model.
The extensive diagnostics and testing process we perform at Garden City Garage also ensures that any fault codes are cleared and any subsequent modules and parts are tested. This is vital for every customer that enters our doors, as safety is our priority and we will also reduce the need for expensive repairs later down the line by identifying problems early.
