Range Rover AdBlue Fault

How to Solve Ad Blue Fault in 2018 Range Rover Sport

The Land Rover marque has never failed to impress the world with its range of vehicles. It doesn’t matter which one of their cars you pick, the Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, Velar or Evoque – all are worthy of praise and admiration.

The brand brings luxury at a price point that its competitors find difficult to match. That’s why a lot of people are attracted to Land Rover vehicles, especially the Range Rover Sport.

One of our clients followed the same trend, and bought himself a 2018 Range Rover Sport. However, after only four years, the SUV started to present Mr. Stephens with problems. The restricted performance in the client’s Range Rover came shortly after he had refilled the Adblue fluid in his vehicle.

The Range Rover Sport was not only showing an Adblue fault, but it started to have trouble starting up. Moreover, the Engine Management Light (EML) also illuminated in the dash along with a rear brake warning.

Our customer had always followed the proper maintenance schedule for his Range Rover Sport. In fact, he went a step further and refilled the Adblue fluid 1500 miles before the scheduled maintenance deadline. Why then was he witnessing such an issue with his Range Rover?

Luckily, our client acted quickly and brought his 2018 Range Rover Sport to Garden City Garage for a thorough investigation. One of our Land Rover specialists, Gareth, was given the formidable job of getting to the bottom of this complex issue for Mr Stephens.

Gareth listened to the client explaining the case while trying to understand the issue.

He confirmed there were some performance issues affecting the vehicle, caused by the Adblue warning. And so, it was Gareth’s job to dig into this deeper and find a solution to the problem.

Once he had heard all the relevant things, our Land Rover specialist moved on to verify the client’s complaints.

Faults Found

Our technician first performed a visual inspection of the Range Rover Sport. He checked for leaks in the Adblue system, inspected the fluid level in the tank, and also looked at the dash for warning signs.

Luckily, there were no leaks but there were a few warnings on the dash. The EML was on, which is always a worrying sight for a vehicle. But none of that was unsettling for Gareth. He sees things like this every day as part of his job at the Garden City Garage.

So, by force of habit, our Range Rover technician initiated the 15-step diagnostic procedure to help resolve the issues being presented on this Range Rover Sport.

Diagnostic Procedure

The in-depth process, followed by all our experts at the Garden City Garage, ensures you get a first-time fix for your vehicle and a cost-effective solution every time.

The first step in the diagnostic procedure is performing a visual inspection, which Gareth had already done on his initial rounds. Next, he used the genuine Land Rover manufacturer-specific SDD TOPIx software to look for any  warning messages on the Range Rover’s onboard computers.

Once Gareth connected the Range Rover Sport to the tool, the following fault codes registered on the screen:

  • P231347-7B – NOx Exceedance – Empty diesel exhaust fluid tank
  • P2BAE-02 – NOx control monitoring System

The codes showed that there was indeed something wrong with the Adblue system and that was affecting the vehicle’s overall performance. Interestingly, the Adblue tank was empty, even though the client had filled it to the brim not too long ago.

Something strange was going on since there were no leaks in the system. Our Range Rover technician had to check again but he got the same result. So, to check for leaks again, he refilled the Adblue tank. The tank was in one piece, meaning there were no visible leaks.

In such cases, the next course of action is to check the tank pressure. Gareth did the same as he performed a pressure test on the Adblue tank. The test failed, which meant some component was causing the issue.

Through a series of additional tests, our Range Rover expert found that the Adblue injector was stuck open. In other words, the injector had failed. Such things can happen and fortunately are very easy to resolve once diagnosed.

Now, we put the safety of our customers at Garden City Garage at the very top of our priority list, which is why, when we were inspecting the Range Rover Sport for leaks we uncovered a potentially dangerous issue that needed the customer’s urgent attention – the rear pads and discs on this Range Rover Sport had become dangerously worn.

We contacted the customer right away with the information – he was pleased that we had made him aware of the issue with his brakes and immediately confirmed that he wanted this work undertaken. At Garden City Garage you are always in total control of what work is carried out on your vehicle.

So, once the diagnosis was out of the way and the customer had confirmed he wanted his brake pads and discs replaced, Gareth moved on to start the repair procedure.

Solving The Problem

Our Range Rover technician removed the faulty Adblue injector and replaced it with a new one. Once that was done, he initialised the injector and waited for it to start working. The part was working as expected. So, Gareth moved on to bleed the system and remove air bubbles from the lines.

Later, he performed the Adblue pressure test and found all pressures to be good.

The vehicle was all good by now and all that was left was to perform a road test to verify the success of the repair. Our expert did exactly that as he took the Range Rover Sport out for a test drive.

The extended road test showed no issues in the vehicle related to the Adblue system. There were no new warnings in the dash and the performance wasn’t restricted as before. The NOx sensors were also working fine.

After the road test, our Range Rover technician changed the rear discs and pads as the customer had requested

He cleared the vehicle of all the fault codes which meant the vehicle was now ready to go back to Mr S.

Summary

A client came into the Garden City Garage, complaining about performance issues and an Adblue warning on his Range Rover Sport dash. We listened to his complaints and went straight to work. Our senior technician, Gareth, used his experience and knowledge of Land Rovers to solve the Adblue fault in no time.

Our Land Rover technician inspected the vehicle and determined a deeper issue was plaguing the Adblue system. Gareth wasted no time using the 15-step diagnostic procedure to get to the root cause of the problem. He found the Adblue injector to be at fault. It was causing the tank to lose pressure, excessive AdBlue consumption and reduced engine performance.

Gareth worked his magic and solved the problem in no time! Not only did he save the client time and money compared to the main Land Rover dealer, he also spotted dangerously worn pads and discs on the Range Rover Sport.
